Freda Gatz is portrayed by rapper Bre-Z. She was born Calesha Murray and given the nickname Bre-Z by her grandmother. She’s been rapping since she was 14. She moved from Philadelphia to Atlanta to pursue her music career and paid the bills by cutting hair. But not anyone’s hair. Bre-Z became a celebrity barber for Ludacris, Akon and DJ Sense, among others. Empire is Bre-Z’s first acting role. The 28-year-old told Billboard: “for a young girl coming off the streets and getting thrown into this pool of greatness” is very much a surreal experience. Empire airs Wednesdays at 9pm on Fox.
